Understanding SLES Eligibility: A Guide for NDIS Participants

SLES is one of the crucial support initiatives under the NDIS, whose objectives are to support persons with disabilities in gaining suitable employment upon leaving school. The NDIS is a Commonwealth-funded scheme to deliver support for Australians with permanent and substantial disabilities. CO involves people in decision-making in relation to areas of their lives and the support required. SLES is particularly concerned with youths in the ages between 15 and 21 who need to be equipped with relevant skills as well as the relevant self-esteem so as to get a job.




Eligibility criteria for SLES

To be eligible for SLES, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  1. Age: Be between 15 and 21 years of age.
  2. Disability: sustain a reasonable and irreversible loss of essential bodily functions that affect the activities of daily living and employability.
  3. NDIS Participation: Approved for NDIS-funded support as a participant.
  4. Support Needs: Need assistance in the acquisition of the employing skills, such as the job search, building for an interview, the work-ready skills, and the workplace training.
  5. Transition Phase: Not be engaged in full-time education, employment, or training at some other establishment at the same time.


However, it is equally important to keep in mind that passing through these criteria does not mean that you will receive SLES funding. The funding is given according to the required support needed by an individual when undertaking the NDIS planning.


SLES Funding Eligibility

SLES remuneration is given according to the needs and objectives concerning the employment of the individual. The NDIS planning process assesses the level of specific support needed and, consequently, the amount of SLES funding eligibility. 

Employment-related objectives and support requirements tendered under NDIS planning should be presented to the optimal extent to garner funding for SLES. Counseling with an NDIS Local Area Coordinator (LAC) ensures that people and their families have the best understanding of the funding mechanism and come up with an effective support plan.


Application procedure for SLES

In order to apply for SLES, a person must first meet the criteria for the NDIS and get registered. To access NDIS, participants must complete an NDIS Access Request form, which will require an assessment. After being approved for NDIS funding, a person has the option of accessing SLES support during the funding review. 

Contacting your NDIS Local Area Coordinator (LAC) is recommended in the course of applying for the program. 

A local area coordinator, or LAC, is also called an access and support facilitator, and it is crucial to engage one during the process to guide you. LACs can currently offer much-needed information, help, and advice. It is therefore important for companies to embrace early planning and preparation to make the most of SLES.
